Hope you all had a nice Thanksgiving! So many bands to see, so little time this past few days. This past Friday night, The Flying Garter was at The Stone Pony to see one of our FAV FAV bands - Super Trans Am. Who better to profile on our Top 5 than one of our FAV FAV drummers - the one and only - Lancy Hyland Stark.

Born and bred in Jersey, Lance has performed and/or recorded with Bruce Springsteen, Jon Bon Jovi, Tenor's of Rock, Mitch Ryder, Phoebe Snow, Dicky Betts, Starz, Gary U.S. Bonds, Chubby Checker, Southside Johnny and Ben E. King, among others, as well as musicians such as Eddie Ojeda (of Twisted Sister), Hal B. Selzer (of Joan Jett & The Blackhearts), Robert Mason (Warrant), Frank DiMino (Angel), Doyle Grisham (Kenny Rogers, George Jones, Jimmy Buffet) and many others. He's performed across the U.S., Canada, U.K. and Moscow and has been featured in Modern Drummer magazine. He's received accolades from industry leaders such as renowned rock producer Steve Thompson and the former VP of Programming for MTV, Tom Hunter. Whew! Say that all in one breath. Simply....Lance is VERY good at what he does!

Of course, we asked him for his "Top 5 Drummers!" Without further adieu...his round-up includes heavy hitters from the 70s (in no particular order) who Lance says laid the groundwork for styles that influenced probably all if not at least most rock drummers after them, whether they realize it or not!

  1. Neil Peart

  2. John Bonham

  3. Carl Palmer

  4. Ansley Dunbar

  5. Keith Moon

There are many more says Lance, who has a fondness for all local NJ drummers he used to go see in Jersey clubs growing up. Fun fact - he is SELF TAUGHT! (As the daughter of a professional drummer who has taken lessons <and still stinks> I can tell you, that is just cray cray to me - drumming is incredibly difficult!)

Lance is super exciting to watch on stage. He's one of the drummers I wish my dad could still be alive to experience. He is full of energy and is known for his flamboyant style. Make sure you DON'T take a bar break or bio break when ""Frankenstein" comes up or you will miss an awesome drum solo Lance does mid-way through.

Special thanks to Lance! Rock on my friend xoxo!
