And getting caught in the rain...Or perhaps in a sea of captain hats?

This past weekend, The Flying Garter headed down to Asbury Park, NJ to one of our favorite venues, the legendary Stone Pony to see Yacht Rock Revue on the Summer Stage.

Yacht what?

Just a collect-all phrase for soft rock from the 70s and 80s. You know "Sailing" by Christopher Cross or "Brandy" by Looking Glass - doesn't necessarily need to be nautical-related. It has become wildly popular and has a huge following. You know you are at a yacht rock show by all the white captain hats. I mean, I wasn't messing up my hair but Jtweets was rockin one that night.

But what about the crowds and the actual show?

Listen, when the line wraps around the Stone Pony you KNOW it's gonna be crowded. According to my friend Goggle, the Stone Pony's Summer Stage has a capacity of 4,500. I'm pretty sure it was at that Saturday night. For me, it was just too crowded to enjoy and I heard many people saying the same thing. Hard to hear the music, see the stage, MOVE. But alas, I love the Stone Pony. And with Jtweets, nothing is stopping this girl from dancing so she made her own little space.

The actual music though...on point. Great set list, talented musicians, would have enjoyed it a whole lot better with less people, but overall solid music. I can't say I'd do it again just because of the crowds, but at a different venue or inside the Stone Pony, which is way more intimate, than yes, you'll catch me swaying to some Hall & Oates or Doobie Brothers - just not in a captain's hat (sorry Jtweets - who did look super cute regardless).

Honorable Mention:

There's ALWAYS an after show inside the Pony following the Summer Stage performance. We stumbled upon one rockin' band - Illegally Blind (website). Hot damn! These guys were great! LOVED the set list of classic rock. It was a short set but man, I was waiting to hear the lead singer belt out some Janis Joplin. Like I KNOW this lady could do it and probably does. We caught up with their bassist Joe after the show to let him know we would be in contact and he was up for it!

Overall, it was a good night with lots of great music. Felt like we scored a bonus concert with Illegally Blind.

Where should we go next???
