So finish your whiskey or beer...
Those immortal words at every bar....I can't tell you how many times I've heard those words at Bar A in Belmar over the last 25+ years...especially when it was being belted out by one of my absolute favorite cover bands in the late 90s / early 2000s as they covered the popular tune by Semisonic but more on that in a few.
Cha Cha Cherry is back with a new recap after spending a week in the Caribbean sipping frozen cocktails while sailing the high seas.
Two Mondays ago, The Flying Garter had a chance to head over to one of our favorite haunts forever to catch the brand, spanking new trio - Sugardragon. Sugardragon is super new on the scene. But wait...these guys look very very familiar....
Picture it....Belmar...Tuesdays...1998....one of THE most popular cover bands back then was LOVEPUMPS who then became Love Lies Bleeding. If you were looking for a cover band covering the most popular, newest or yet-to-be heard alt rock songs, this band WAS IT. They were covering tunes BEFORE they got radio play and got super popular because they just had an ear for it. This band was it for both Cha Cha Cherry who first saw them while selling roses or shots on any given night at Mother's in Wayne or the Wreck Room in Wallington and many hot summer nights at Jenk's, Tradewinds and yes, Bar A. Jweets was catching them up in North Jersey with her brother at places like the Junkyard. WE WERE FAN GURLS.
Fast forward over 25 years later and three of the original members of Love Pumps / Love Lies Bleeding - Rob, Steve and John - who never stopped being BFFs - have now formed SUGARDRAGON. And Cha Cha and Jtweets could not be happier.
We sat down with the boys to interview them (yes, broken record - interview coming) and then caught their set. It was very nostalgic to see them up there. Legit felt like I was transported back to the late 90s watching them up there, remembering how much alt rock was my core back then. These guys are still rocking it - Rob on guitar and vocals, Steve on bass and vocals and John on drums and vocals. It was like no time has passed. They were such a big part of my music scene back in the day and I hold them responsible for helping me discover new music - pre-social media, songs that weren't getting radio time. Many times I found myself running to Vintage Vinyl (wipes tear away) to get a CD of some artist they performed.
We can't wait for you to hear the interview with these guys soon. In the meantime, check them out every Monday at Bar A and follow them on Facebook to see where else they will be.
Extra special thanks to Steve, Rob and John for chatting with us (and debuting their awesome new Sugardragon flasks)! Special shoutout to Fudgey the Whale.
